Service above self is the well known motto of the Rotarians. It discourages the self seeking thoughts and deeds. Instead it promotes the mind of a Rotarian to render his service for all concerned and henceforth unite them into a friendly ambiance. The motto goes well with the objective and ideal of the Rotarians. In fact it is the essence of a Rotarian’s thought.

The motto, however, originated from the speech of Frank Collins when he addressed the second annual convention of Rotary International in 1911. Being asked by Paul Harris he delivered his speech and there he explained how the club had followed the principle of “service, not self” in its activities. His speech eventually motivated all the Rotarians and the phrase “service, not self” strikes a chord with all the Rotarians. Over times the phrase evolved into “service above self”.

Today this slogan or motto reveals the true identity of a Rotarian.
